ASP J-Bay Open Pundit Shea Lopez Picks 2014

Shea Lopez’ picks

ASP J-Bay Pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at Jeffreys Bay.

As one of the more active phases in many years for the southern hemisphere winds down, this year’s J-Bay event appears to be just in time to receive what remains of the bounty. After an initial pulse, all eyes will be shifting to the tail end of the event’s waiting period in hopes for forecast charts to signal more of the astonishing quality J-Bay is known for.

When picking a Fantasy Surfer team, I assumed that most heats would be held in good surf.

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For J-Bay, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in power waves (vs barrels or performance). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Shea Lopez’ picks

ASP Fiji Pro Pundit Shea Lopez picks his team foor the 2014 contest at Cloudbreak and/or Restaurants.

For this year’s event, with little in the way of storm energy on the charts, we will likely be seeing average waves at Cloudbreak to start the waiting period. But there is still potential for something of merit to develop late.

When picking my Fantasy Surfer team for Fiji, I added a number of goofyfooters. From past experience, myself and every other goofy-footer on Tour would be licking our chops in anticipation of this event. The main advantage to being goofy at Cloudbreak is the ease at which you can narrowly escape through the doggy door exits at the end of the reef at a section called Shishkabobs.

Shea Lopez’s picks

Shea Lopez makes his Fantasy Surfer picks for the 2014 Billabong Rio Pro.

A tropical opposite to the veteran-favoring Bells event, Rio de Janeiro requires youthful exuberance to shine. The quick, thick, and challenging sandbars of Rio can be a tuberiding treat or aerial feast for those with the right skill set. It’s a highly-charged atmosphere on the beach, which buckles some competitors and brings out the best in others. With a fun swell forecasted to kick off the waiting period, you can expect the Top 34 to showcase some great surfing in the opening rounds.

My Fantasy Surfer team lost a few of the older, more grounded surfers. Replacing them are younger guys with plenty to prove.

Wilko has been quiet, too quiet. With plenty of talent, Wilko appears to be in a sort of adjustment period with a new approach to competition. If he finds his rhythm and routinely loads up that big backhand blast—the one that is arguably the most impressive backhand turn from a goofyfooter on Tour—he will win heats at Bells. -more-

Shea Lopez makes his Fantasy Surfer picks for the 2014 ASP Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

Experience is worth its weight in gold at Margaret River, and experience will determine who does well and who spends their heat getting caught inside, bouncing off the reef en route to a 36th-place finish. In this open-ocean locale, power surfing will seize the day. Think Occy and Luke Egan. If either of them were competing today, they would be the favorites. -more-
