Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks 2015

Shea’s detailed write-up

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest at Bells.

Gabriel Medina is the current world champ after a dream year that saw everything fall neatly into place for him. Joel Parkinson is surfing stronger and smoother than ever. John John is already at Bells practicing. All three of these elite surfers had a disastrous showing at Snapper and lost out in Round 3. None of these three made my FS team, but all warrant much attention at Bells. Heading into Torquay, it’s do-or-die time for the Tour. Historically, you’ll see five world title contenders break from the pack here.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest at Snapper or Kirra.

If there’s one thing you need to know about Snapper Rocks, it’s that sand is paramount. The bars that give rise to Snapper’s perfection are the child of the Tweed River dredge pipe that dumps sand just up the point. Throw in an east-southeast swell and you’re left with one of the most mesmerizing waves in the world. However, just what these sandbars will look like when the World Tour opens up shop is the big question. Last week, Cyclone Marcia lit up the coast with perfect conditions, but did she wash away the banks in the process or are we in for a treat? Right now, my fingers are crossed. With that in mind, I’d like to note that I’ve picked the surfers on my team based on their ability to shine whether they’re threading dredging Kirra tubes or toying with playful Snapper Rocks.

Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal Pundit Picks Shea Lopez 2014

Shea’s detailed write-up

Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at Supertubos.

While the Top 34 trek from France to Portugal, a rather large storm is pulling together directly into the swell window for Supertubes. For Kelly Slater, the large swell should allow an easier path to the final and a continued shrinking of Medina’s lead going into Pipeline. But don’t count out the dark horses in this event. The bottom half of the ratings are fighting tooth and nail to earn another year on Tour. These surfers could prove to be incredibly dangerous and could spell all kinds of trouble for Medina, who’s trying to keep Slater at bay and claim his first world title.

Quiksilver Pro France Pundit Picks Shea Lopez 2014

Shea’s detailed write-up

Quiksilver Pro France Pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at Hossegor.

After watching Lowers, I picked a Fantasy Surfer team for the Quik Pro France that I feel can excel in the wide range of conditions on offer at any event there, due to enormous tide changes and varied weather conditions. With swell forecasted from multiple storms circulating the Atlantic at this time, here’s hoping the Top 34 find a wave-park of opportunity along Hossegor’s fabled stretch of sand.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Hurley Pro Trestles Pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at Trestles.

Lowers allows surfers to go their biggest in a wide range of conditions. With yet another swell gracing Southern California now, everyone should have had plenty of sessions to readjust to more rippable waves after the heavy tubes of Teahupoo. Looking at the waiting period, forecast charts point to strong swell at the finish of the Hurley Pro, and on bigger days at Lowers, traditional power surfing has proven a winning recipe for success.

Surfer Stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Trestles, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in performance waves (vs barreling or power waves). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth. Billabong Pro Teahupoo Tahiti Pundit Picks Shea Lopez 2014

Shea’s detailed write-up

Billabong Pro Teahupoo Pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at our favorite mutant wave in Tahiti.

Riding Teahupoo safely requires not only great skill, but tremendous commitment. It takes the highest caliber of surfing to excel out there, and every world champion since Teahupoo’s addition to the Tour has proven themselves fearless when peering over the ledge. With a close ratings race, we should see a number of surfers looking to step up and throw their name in the ring as Teahupoo chargers and world title contenders. This should make for quite a spectacle.
