Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Ross Williams Pundit Picks 2015

Ross Williams’ picks

Ross Williams gives his start ’em, sit ’em list for the 2015 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the second stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Start ‘Em: Mick, Jordy, Melling
Sit ‘Em: Pupo, Hall, Asing
Darkhorse: Bede

First and foremost: Get your forecast on! If you intend to nail your picks for Bells you’ll need to be on top of conditions. The contest takes advantage of a variety of breaks based on tides, so a surfer who would normally excel in one kind of break may end up with poor results if the event changes location. Bells’ four options for breaks include the Bells Bowl, Winkipop, Rincon and Johanna.

We won’t know for sure where the comp will run until each morning’s call, but here’s a crude scale with which to guesstimate: Lots of big swell, think Bells Bowl. Mediocre swell, think low-tide Bowl and high-tide Rincon. Small-to-weak swell think Winkipop. No swell at all think Johanna. My picks are based on mediocre swell, which is the most likely scenario based on the current forecast.

Darkhorse: Banting

Snapper Rocks is a perfect example of why picking winners come with nuances. Sure, the wave is epic, but it doesn’t exactly lend itself to everyone’s strengths. It has a camouflaged takeoff zone in that it’s difficult to pick the right wave. The difference between the second and third wave in a set can be the difference between a midrange score and a 10!

Not every wave hits the sand perfectly and that’s where the locals have an advantage. The wave is tough to read. Surfers need to know when to speed up and slow down, when to hammer a turn and when to tuck into a pit. The wave demands your attention and makes you pay if you have poor timing or if you use a forced rhythm. Tides are also a huge influence at Snapper. Many surfers will — or at least they should — have two types of boards with them on the Gold Coast: One for high tide, which can be fat and mushy, and one for low tide, which is dredged-out with very little room in the pocket.

Start ‘Em: JJF, Julian, Logie
Sit ‘Em: Bourez, Otton, Melling
Darkhorse: Dion

When I’m picking my Fantasy lineup, the first thing I look at is the wave. Supertubos is pretty similar to Hossegor. So, do you bother changing your team? If you believe in momentum and the power of confidence you better do some shuffling. The punchy beachbreak in Portugal will provide tubes and ramps, but it won’t show mercy for the mentally fragile. Here’s my take on who is rolling through the European leg with a big smile and a ton of moxie.

More than any other event on Tour, competitors need to be very patient and, more importantly, flexible with their equipment and state of mind. The waves are often perfect in southern France but there’s always that small window where the wind, tides and swell cooperate making for that magical session of heavy pits and pure happiness. The reality is most competitors will be forced to challenge themselves with not only their opponents but also the conditions. What does this all add up too? Pick dudes that are adaptable and have a knack for being creative.

ADS is such an amazing competitor. He never makes mistakes, hardly falls, and has all the tricks in the book. Not only is he surfing better than ever, he continues his quest to study the sport and strengthen his skills to patch any potential weak spots. With a somewhat small wave forecast ahead, look for ADS to come into this event fresh, focused, and ready to win his first WCT in 2014.

Surfer Stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Trestles, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in performance waves (vs barreling or power waves). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth. Start ‘Em: Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Jadson Andre
Sit ‘Em: Adriano De Souza, Adam Melling, Mitch Crews
Darkhorse: Matt Wilkinson

Jadson loves Tahiti. This is a vibe that can only help when faced with a 10-foot swell. It’s well documented that Jadson’s resurgence on tour is because of his commitment not only to his surfing but his confidence. While taking time to requalify for the tour, Jadson found his inner happy state, conquering his demons by improving every aspect of his surfing. Carves, backhand, and yes, hollow waves.
