Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Nick Carroll's Preview 2015

Nick Carroll’s preview

Nick Carroll takes a look at the veterans, the rookies and who to keep an eye on at Bells.

Favourites: Toledo, Mick, Julian, Medina
Don’t miss: Jordy, JJF, Slater, Wilko
Potentially lethal: Owen, Pupo, Parko, ADS, Kolohe, Taj
Dark horses: Italo, Nat, Wiggolly

It’s been three years since someone won back to back CTs (guess who…yep, Kelly, in 2012), and while multiple winners during a year aren’t uncommon, double-ups are–probably because to pull it these days, you’ve gotta win too many heats running. Regardless, we reckon Filipe’s as good a chance as anyone, given his scorching form and the nature of the surf forecast. You need to be super psyched to win a small Bells, and he is. Julian got very close to the Bell last year and has a better grip on the winning formula this year. Fanning is in excellent form with an excellent quiver and many years of succeeding here; while he is vulnerable to a hyperactive air master or backside spray-thrower, he’s still a good bet in a town where he feels so at home. And Gabriel, hell, he is Gabriel. Chances of him blowing another event entry the way he did at Snapper, we reckon, might be as close to zero as it gets.

Ross Williams gives his start ’em, sit ’em list for the 2015 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the second stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Sit ‘Em: Pupo, Hall, Asing
Darkhorse: Bede

First and foremost: Get your forecast on! If you intend to nail your picks for Bells you’ll need to be on top of conditions. The contest takes advantage of a variety of breaks based on tides, so a surfer who would normally excel in one kind of break may end up with poor results if the event changes location. Bells’ four options for breaks include the Bells Bowl, Winkipop, Rincon and Johanna.

We won’t know for sure where the comp will run until each morning’s call, but here’s a crude scale with which to guesstimate: Lots of big swell, think Bells Bowl. Mediocre swell, think low-tide Bowl and high-tide Rincon. Small-to-weak swell think Winkipop. No swell at all think Johanna. My picks are based on mediocre swell, which is the most likely scenario based on the current forecast.

Snapper Rocks is a perfect example of why picking winners come with nuances. Sure, the wave is epic, but it doesn’t exactly lend itself to everyone’s strengths. It has a camouflaged takeoff zone in that it’s difficult to pick the right wave. The difference between the second and third wave in a set can be the difference between a midrange score and a 10!

Not every wave hits the sand perfectly and that’s where the locals have an advantage. The wave is tough to read. Surfers need to know when to speed up and slow down, when to hammer a turn and when to tuck into a pit. The wave demands your attention and makes you pay if you have poor timing or if you use a forced rhythm. Tides are also a huge influence at Snapper. Many surfers will — or at least they should — have two types of boards with them on the Gold Coast: One for high tide, which can be fat and mushy, and one for low tide, which is dredged-out with very little room in the pocket.

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2015 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper or Kirra.

Pick ’em
The Elite: Fanning, Parko
The Grinders: Kolohe, Owen, Julian, Toledo
The Strugglers: Dusty, Ferreira

Maybe consider
The Elite: Medina
The Grinders: Nat
The Strugglers: Wilko

If you’re playing a game of word association and the topic is the Gold Coast, I’ll be damned if the first thing out of your mouth isn’t Mick Fanning. Kelly might be Pipeline Jesus — and he’s certainly Cloudbreak Jesus — but Mick is officially Superbank Jesus.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks 2015

Shea’s detailed write-up

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest at Snapper or Kirra.

If there’s one thing you need to know about Snapper Rocks, it’s that sand is paramount. The bars that give rise to Snapper’s perfection are the child of the Tweed River dredge pipe that dumps sand just up the point. Throw in an east-southeast swell and you’re left with one of the most mesmerizing waves in the world. However, just what these sandbars will look like when the World Tour opens up shop is the big question. Last week, Cyclone Marcia lit up the coast with perfect conditions, but did she wash away the banks in the process or are we in for a treat? Right now, my fingers are crossed. With that in mind, I’d like to note that I’ve picked the surfers on my team based on their ability to shine whether they’re threading dredging Kirra tubes or toying with playful Snapper Rocks.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Nick Carroll's Preview 2014

Nick Carroll’s preview

Nick Carroll takes a look at the veterans, the rookies and who to keep an eye on at Snapper.

Parko (6), Kolohe (11), Owen (12), Julian (14) and Filipe (17) all seem like they’re currently seeded a tiny bit below their potential at this event. If they get to round three’s re-seeding, they’ll probably pull guys well within their range. Simpo, CJ and Micro are at the other end and will instantly draw some hot shot or other. This stuff tends to work itself out during a WCT year but it throws a curve into the Quik Pro every time, this year perhaps more than most.

Personally, aside from the above, I’m gonna be watching the surprise package guys: Ricardo Christie, Matt Banting, Filipe, and Keanu Asing. Christie has one of the best power surfing styles to come along in years, Banting’s relaxed enough to get past the rookie nerves, Keanu’s a muscly little fella and Filipe might build a world title run base in 2015. And I’m gonna watch Kelly and Mick because how can you not.
