Darkhorse: Banting

Snapper Rocks is a perfect example of why picking winners come with nuances. Sure, the wave is epic, but it doesn’t exactly lend itself to everyone’s strengths. It has a camouflaged takeoff zone in that it’s difficult to pick the right wave. The difference between the second and third wave in a set can be the difference between a midrange score and a 10!

Not every wave hits the sand perfectly and that’s where the locals have an advantage. The wave is tough to read. Surfers need to know when to speed up and slow down, when to hammer a turn and when to tuck into a pit. The wave demands your attention and makes you pay if you have poor timing or if you use a forced rhythm. Tides are also a huge influence at Snapper. Many surfers will — or at least they should — have two types of boards with them on the Gold Coast: One for high tide, which can be fat and mushy, and one for low tide, which is dredged-out with very little room in the pocket.

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2015 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper or Kirra.

Pick ’em
The Elite: Fanning, Parko
The Grinders: Kolohe, Owen, Julian, Toledo
The Strugglers: Dusty, Ferreira

Maybe consider
The Elite: Medina
The Grinders: Nat
The Strugglers: Wilko

If you’re playing a game of word association and the topic is the Gold Coast, I’ll be damned if the first thing out of your mouth isn’t Mick Fanning. Kelly might be Pipeline Jesus — and he’s certainly Cloudbreak Jesus — but Mick is officially Superbank Jesus.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks 2015

Shea’s detailed write-up

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest at Snapper or Kirra.

If there’s one thing you need to know about Snapper Rocks, it’s that sand is paramount. The bars that give rise to Snapper’s perfection are the child of the Tweed River dredge pipe that dumps sand just up the point. Throw in an east-southeast swell and you’re left with one of the most mesmerizing waves in the world. However, just what these sandbars will look like when the World Tour opens up shop is the big question. Last week, Cyclone Marcia lit up the coast with perfect conditions, but did she wash away the banks in the process or are we in for a treat? Right now, my fingers are crossed. With that in mind, I’d like to note that I’ve picked the surfers on my team based on their ability to shine whether they’re threading dredging Kirra tubes or toying with playful Snapper Rocks.

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Nick Carroll’s Preview

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Nick Carroll's Preview 2014

Nick Carroll’s preview

Nick Carroll takes a look at the veterans, the rookies and who to keep an eye on at Snapper.

Parko (6), Kolohe (11), Owen (12), Julian (14) and Filipe (17) all seem like they’re currently seeded a tiny bit below their potential at this event. If they get to round three’s re-seeding, they’ll probably pull guys well within their range. Simpo, CJ and Micro are at the other end and will instantly draw some hot shot or other. This stuff tends to work itself out during a WCT year but it throws a curve into the Quik Pro every time, this year perhaps more than most.

Personally, aside from the above, I’m gonna be watching the surprise package guys: Ricardo Christie, Matt Banting, Filipe, and Keanu Asing. Christie has one of the best power surfing styles to come along in years, Banting’s relaxed enough to get past the rookie nerves, Keanu’s a muscly little fella and Filipe might build a world title run base in 2015. And I’m gonna watch Kelly and Mick because how can you not.

Surfer stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Portugal, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in the European leg. For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth. Pick ’em
The Elite: JJF, Slater
The Grinders: Jordy, Pupo, Nat, Julian
The Strugglers: Dion, Artiz

Skeptical
The Elite: Median
The Grinders: CJ
The Strugglers: Raoni

John Florence. Gabriel Medina’s future worst nightmare might start sooner than he’d think. This will be the next truly great rivalry in surfing, and goddamn have we needed one for a while! After stumbling out of the gates, Johnathan struck like a cobra — 3rd, 2nd and 1st in the past three events. He’s now a long shot to win the World Title and if nothing else, act as spoiler. If you haven’t seen the episode of #TOURNOTES where JJF candidly expresses his feelings toward Medina, I highly suggest you give it a look. Slater asks, “If we both make the final you better let me win. I need some points.” Johnny responds with, “I just might. Just because…” …because he does not like Medina. Why? Because all Gabriel does is win, and sometimes when he does not win, he cries. Meanwhile all JJF does is surf, and surf better than anyone in this world ever has. He’s clearly better than Medina but as you know, the best surfer does not always place 1st.
