By now you’ve heard about the purple blob that is on a direct course for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. You’d probably pick Shane Dorian and Mark Healey if you could, because the comp zone may resemble Waimea more than Main Break!

The Filipe Toledo Show might get iced out for now as the conditions are going to be the farthest thing from the reverse-air playground we’ve seen in the first two events. What’s so awesome is that guys like Filipe can show us that they will charge in the heavy stuff! You never know who might just come out of the cowboy closet and flex their charging muscles. With that said, this circus just got super interesting, making picking your lineup pretty challenging.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Margaret River Pro: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest in West Oz.

While the past few events haven’t offered up much in the way of decent surf, Margaret River is staring down a massive swell-spawning purple blob which should finally give us an opportunity to take in some real action from the world’s best. And man, do the 34 need to let off the steam that has been building due to a lack of surf this season. When Margaret’s is over 6 foot, it becomes an open-ocean venue, requiring an entirely new skill set to dominate. It’s always interesting see who has the meat to throw around a big board on a large workable wall. For this event, my FS team is composed of surfers with the experience and skill to successfully navigate the fiery, open-ocean conditions we’re hoping to see for this comp.

I have some good news and some bad news as the MWCT (Mushy Wave Championship Tour) continues at Main Break Margaret River. The good news: A huge swell coincides with the start of the waiting period and it should continue to pump for multiple days. The bad news: It takes Commissioner Kieren Perrow approximately two hours of getting barreled at The Box before he can comfortably make a call to change locations. Oh, and permits don’t allow for North Point.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks 2015

Shea’s detailed write-up

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest at Bells.

Gabriel Medina is the current world champ after a dream year that saw everything fall neatly into place for him. Joel Parkinson is surfing stronger and smoother than ever. John John is already at Bells practicing. All three of these elite surfers had a disastrous showing at Snapper and lost out in Round 3. None of these three made my FS team, but all warrant much attention at Bells. Heading into Torquay, it’s do-or-die time for the Tour. Historically, you’ll see five world title contenders break from the pack here.

Mason Ho $1,500,000
Kolohe Andino $7,5000,000
Julian Wilson $8,000,000

Jordy Smith $9,250,000
Dusty Payne $3,750,000

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Nick Carroll's Preview 2015

Nick Carroll’s preview

Nick Carroll takes a look at the veterans, the rookies and who to keep an eye on at Bells.

Favourites: Toledo, Mick, Julian, Medina
Don’t miss: Jordy, JJF, Slater, Wilko
Potentially lethal: Owen, Pupo, Parko, ADS, Kolohe, Taj
Dark horses: Italo, Nat, Wiggolly

It’s been three years since someone won back to back CTs (guess who…yep, Kelly, in 2012), and while multiple winners during a year aren’t uncommon, double-ups are–probably because to pull it these days, you’ve gotta win too many heats running. Regardless, we reckon Filipe’s as good a chance as anyone, given his scorching form and the nature of the surf forecast. You need to be super psyched to win a small Bells, and he is. Julian got very close to the Bell last year and has a better grip on the winning formula this year. Fanning is in excellent form with an excellent quiver and many years of succeeding here; while he is vulnerable to a hyperactive air master or backside spray-thrower, he’s still a good bet in a town where he feels so at home. And Gabriel, hell, he is Gabriel. Chances of him blowing another event entry the way he did at Snapper, we reckon, might be as close to zero as it gets.

Ross Williams gives his start ’em, sit ’em list for the 2015 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the second stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

First and foremost: Get your forecast on! If you intend to nail your picks for Bells you’ll need to be on top of conditions. The contest takes advantage of a variety of breaks based on tides, so a surfer who would normally excel in one kind of break may end up with poor results if the event changes location. Bells’ four options for breaks include the Bells Bowl, Winkipop, Rincon and Johanna.

We won’t know for sure where the comp will run until each morning’s call, but here’s a crude scale with which to guesstimate: Lots of big swell, think Bells Bowl. Mediocre swell, think low-tide Bowl and high-tide Rincon. Small-to-weak swell think Winkipop. No swell at all think Johanna. My picks are based on mediocre swell, which is the most likely scenario based on the current forecast.
