Shea’s picks

Hurley Pro Trestles: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the eighth stop on the WSL Championship Tour at the skate park wave in SoCal.

San Clemente, California is to the United States as Coolangatta, Queensland is to Australia. With Lowers serving as the foundation for this bustling surf community, this incredibly playful and uniform wave drew me and my brother, Cory, to set up a residence there during our time competing on the World Tour. Drawing in top talents (and, well, some vagabonds alike), surfers migrate to San Clemente to find their place in this ultra-competitive and continually growing community. Current world title contenders Adriano de Souza and Filipe Toledo are now regular faces in the lineup. And it makes sense. With two major WSL events here, careers can be made and lost on the cobbles. As we stare down a wide-open title race, expect to see some serious battles when the horn blows.

Ross Williams’ picks

Ross Williams gives his start ’em, sit ’em pundit pick list for the 2015 Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupo’o, the seventh stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Start ‘Em: Owen, JJF, CJ
Sit ‘Em: Toledo, Keanu, Hall
Darkhorse: Christie

Teahupo’o offers the most intense and exciting six seconds in our sport. When firing on all cylinders this wave requires more guts than any venue on the Championship Tour. Hecklers and caddies warn contestants as the approaching black blob ambushes the comp zone with whistles and cheers. Thick, scary and extremely intimidating. But if you can manage to tame the beast, there’s nothing more satisfying. Usually I’d provide you with a sneaky pick that will deliver those big points over other Fantasy players, but this time I’m not messing around.

Nick’s picks

Nick Carroll gives his pundit review of the Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupo’o, the seventh stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

NEAR CERTAINTIES: Julian, Owen, JJF, Flores
PRETTY GOOD BETS: Nat, Wiggolly, Medina, Ace, Bede, Wilko
POINT PROVERS: Toledo, ADS, Bourez, Kolohe
UNKNOWABLES: Slater, Mick, Wildcards

Last year, Teahupoo went off its rocker and virtually decided the world championship via Gabriel Medina’s very coolly assembled win. It was surely the highlight event of 2014. This year, things will almost certainly be a bit trickier. The surfers are coming to Tahiti having experienced a terrifying and dramatic end to the last event at Jeffreys, at least five of ‘em are in the title hunt, and the oceanic outlook isn’t showing off any 12-foot days in the near future.

Shea’s picks

Billabong Pro Tahiti: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the seventh stop on the WSL Championship Tour at the mutant reef break at Teahupo’o.

At a wave like Teahupoo, it pays to be tenacious. This is no place for the timid, the sitting ducks, the uninitiated. When the horizon darkens and the channel erupts in a fit of rabid spectators calling you into a wave that could very well kill you, there’s no room for hesitation. To win heats here, you need to stand your ground. You need to prolong the takeoff until you’re skirting the line between taking the wave of your dreams and the beating of your nightmares. You need to tame a wave that most of us would happily deem unrideable, and best of all, you need to make it look easy. It’s with this mantra in mind that I’ve drafted up my Fantasy Surfer team for Tahiti.

Shea’s picks

J-Bay Open: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the sixth stop on the WSL Championship Tour at the famous right point break in South Africa.

J-Bay is one of those few locales that can take an unruly open-ocean swell and transform it into corduroy perfection. Serving up everything from an easy entry and racing wall to ruler-edged tube sections that appear to stretch on forever, J-Bay truly has it all. Watching the tour’s upper echelon— Slater, Smith, Parko, Fanning— maximize every opportunity with minimum excess can be a mesmerizing show. However, watching a lesser surfer struggle to find their line or flow as they butcher a beautiful canvas can leave you questioning the future of our sport. Of the young crew, not many look prepared to match the veterans at a wave like Jeffrey’s. My Fantasy Surfer team is composed of a mix of surfers that have either proven themselves here before or have impressed me this year at other spots.

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2015 J-Bay Open in South Africa, the sixth stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Pick ’em: Mick, Slater, Bede, Parko, Jordy, SeaBass, Melling, Dane
Maybe consider: Owen, Medina, Muniz

A couple weeks ago I sat in a boat, merely yards away, as Owen Wright made history scoring two perfect 10 point rides, twice, in one event. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I high-fived everyone within reach. I celebrated in the Cloudbreak channel with Owen during an all-time moment in his life. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed… …and he wasn’t on my fantasy team.

Cloudbreak and Supertubes both require a high surfing IQ: Surfers who match their tempo with the speed of the wave have the most success. You need to take in the information the wall ahead is giving well before the time comes to launch your choice of maneuvers. That’s what makes guys like Tom Curren, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Jordy Smith so great at Jeffreys Bay. Just like Fiji, J-Bay can be inconsistent, so a surfer’s ability to shrug off the pressure while he waits for that one perfect wave is key.
