Nowhere is more of an unknown from a conditions standpoint than France. It might be howling offshore, 8-10 feet and look like Sunset beach. It could be head high lefts breaking a half mile out, or double over head, heaving barrels 20 feet from the shore at La Graviere.

Nothing will make your head spin like trying to pick a fantasy team after watching the world’s best destroy Lowers for three days straight. One minute you’re set thinking Kelly will continue his stellar track record here and win again, the next you see Michel Bourez and he looks completely unstoppable. The fact is, everyone surfs insane at Lowers. If you pushed your grandma into a set wave here she’d probably rip. It’s very easy, and thus very fun to watch because these guys make it their bitch.

After he had yet another shocker here last year, I said that I’d never again pick Michel in Tahiti. He puts too much pressure on himself and isn’t significantly better than the other elite surfers at Teahupo’o. Then I got drunk with him in Fiji and we talked about this event and what would happen if he won. It made me so happy to think about. This is Passion Picks and I want Michel to win so I’m picking him. Fuck the odds. He’s going to do it for his brother, who got severely hurt in the trials just a few days ago.

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his picks for the 2014 ASP J-Bay Open.

Play with fire, you’re gonna get burned. Michel is a walking fireball right now. I’ve been caught on fire before. It was a hell on earth. I won’t play without him on my bench. Michel for World Champ! It’s official, I’m on the bandwagon.

I see that only 1% of teams have Nat Young starting. That’s bullshit. The kid is gonna go apeshit out there. I know it’s hard to pick him over Kelly, Mick, and the regulars, but come on. The kid is dangerous and eternally motivated.

The Elite: Michel Bourez, Kelly Slater, Nat Young
The Grinders: Jordy Smith, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, Adam Melling, Owen Wright
The Strugglers and Wilds: Kai Otton, Dion Atkinson, Jeremy Flores

Yeah, yeah, yeah…go with the popular pick after his dream run last year. Well, did you watch last year? This wave is tailor-made for Natty boy. I believe this kid will ring that bell multiple times in his career. I believe it should start now. And I believe we are going vert if it does. -more-
