Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2016 J-Bay Open, the 6th stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

J-Bay has been firing and quite a few of the world’s best have flown/driven over early to get a slice of the action. Looks like more swell with offshores Wednesday/Thursday so have your team ready for action.

It sure has been nice having a break between the Hurley Pro at Trestles and the 2015 Quiksilver Pro France. The extra time has allowed me to dig into some stats and get my game plan dialed for www.fantasygrudge.com. I’m up $250 over the past two events and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. But as always, I’ll share the inside info and let you in on some tips. Let’s go!

Pick ’em: Mick, Slater, Bede, Parko, Jordy, SeaBass, Melling, Dane
Maybe consider: Owen, Medina, Muniz

A couple weeks ago I sat in a boat, merely yards away, as Owen Wright made history scoring two perfect 10 point rides, twice, in one event. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I high-fived everyone within reach. I celebrated in the Cloudbreak channel with Owen during an all-time moment in his life. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed… …and he wasn’t on my fantasy team.

You should also consider Aritz Aranburu just for shits. How funny would if be if you did and he made the finals? You’d basically be Rainman. #worthit

I thought long and hard about this one but in the end decided not to throw [Adriano] on my team. After looking over the past 4 years of results, it’s solid. 9th, 2nd, 5th, 1st. Sure the win came in unison with floatergate, but for an event that’s basically a crapshoot, Adriano shows solid consistency. Unfortunately, Passion Picks doesn’t give a shit about consistency. And of course, his dream run is bound to end at some point. Maybe it’s unlikely to think it ends in Brazil, but I want a good title race and Adriano is currently in the way of that by doing too well.

I have some good news and some bad news as the MWCT (Mushy Wave Championship Tour) continues at Main Break Margaret River. The good news: A huge swell coincides with the start of the waiting period and it should continue to pump for multiple days. The bad news: It takes Commissioner Kieren Perrow approximately two hours of getting barreled at The Box before he can comfortably make a call to change locations. Oh, and permits don’t allow for North Point.

If you’re playing a game of word association and the topic is the Gold Coast, I’ll be damned if the first thing out of your mouth isn’t Mick Fanning. Kelly might be Pipeline Jesus — and he’s certainly Cloudbreak Jesus — but Mick is officially Superbank Jesus.

John Florence. Gabriel Medina’s future worst nightmare might start sooner than he’d think. This will be the next truly great rivalry in surfing, and goddamn have we needed one for a while! After stumbling out of the gates, Johnathan struck like a cobra — 3rd, 2nd and 1st in the past three events. He’s now a long shot to win the World Title and if nothing else, act as spoiler. If you haven’t seen the episode of #TOURNOTES where JJF candidly expresses his feelings toward Medina, I highly suggest you give it a look. Slater asks, “If we both make the final you better let me win. I need some points.” Johnny responds with, “I just might. Just because…” …because he does not like Medina. Why? Because all Gabriel does is win, and sometimes when he does not win, he cries. Meanwhile all JJF does is surf, and surf better than anyone in this world ever has. He’s clearly better than Medina but as you know, the best surfer does not always place 1st.
