Nick Carroll gives his pundit review of the Fiji Pro, the fifth stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Momentum: Toledo, Wilko, Bede, Jadson, Ricardo
Experience: Mick, ADS, Parko, Flores, Medina
Experience++: Slater
Frothing: Pupo, Jadson, CJ, Seabass, Otton, Jay Davies
Likes: Kerr, Owen, Nat

Cloudbreak is probably the best WCT wave in the world, not as gladiatorial as Pipe maybe, or as fearsome as large Teahupo’o, but more open to a wide range of surfing styles; everyone’s got a shot, and many heats will come down to the fall of the set waves through priority. Armchair experts will be muttering about how the big older power guys will be putting it to the light-footed kids but we suspect it may turn out a bit more complex than that.

Who will? Like we said, anyone’s in with a shot. A great board or two may turn things. So might momentum. So might experience. So might froth.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Fiji Pro: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the fifth stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Once you’ve experienced it in person, the mesmerizing allure of Cloudbreak burns an indelible impression upon you. A kaleidoscope of colors and shapes, the waves there remind us that we are living in a world that must be seen to be believed. The waves can be so perfect that unseasoned competitors will often take on a deer-in-headlights look as they stare off into this heavenly setup. (If you haven’t guessed it by now, I enjoyed my time competing at the Fiji Pro more than any other stop on Tour.) For Kelly Slater, Owen Wright, and a few others, the options that span the vast expanse of Cloudbreak are easy to read and exploit to their liking. For others, drawing the right lines amid this pristine canvas can be more difficult than it appears.

Sit ‘Em: Toledo, Bede, Hall

Cloudbreak and Restaurants are the two spots where the action will go down. Although they’re not without challenges, they provide a reliable platform when the waves show up. Sure, it can be windy and sets can be a little on the inconsistent side at times, but when a set does come you can almost guarantee that the wave will provide an eight-point ride or higher provided that you utilize its strengths.
