Surfer Stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We’re going to do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Bells, we picked our team based on past results in power waves (vs performance or barrels). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Surfer Stats

Before the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, we picked our aspwedge Fantasy Surfer team without looking at the names–we only used past results (see the graph). We call these our blind picks. Based on the forecast, we picked this team based on past performance wave results. The last day was clearly wave for the power surfers, and the day at The Box favoured the barrel-riders. Even still, the team beat all of our club teams (which based on our results, wasn’t a huge feat), and did score a respectable 840.

ASP Drug Aware Margaret River Pro: Taj vs Bede re-run

ASP Drug Aware Margaret River Pro: Taj vs Bede re-run

“Breaking Bede” by Mimi LaMontagne

With 3 minutes left of R3:H1, Taj needed an 8.17 to catch Bede. Taj chose his wave and started paddling, but got his hand caught in Bede’s leash. The judges decided to re-run the heat at the end of the day. Crazy start and finish to the day. Here’s the video of the incident, as well as the ASP interview with Bede after the re-run.

Rather than drag himself home to have a cheeky cry, Taj went straight to the judges booth. And for good reason, because after a few hours of debate, a re-surf was called. According to some rule in some unknown ASP handbook, the situation had caused an impediment to Taj’s ability to surf the wave to his full potential, and therefore, to win the heat (and it did). So at the end of the day, after the whole of round three had finished and the waves were beyond gross, Taj and Bede paddled back out. Taj, determined. Bede, angry, cold and ropeable. But Bede went out with ferocity. -more-

I’m happy to get another chance, but when you win and you’re frustrated, you don’t feel like you’ve set any benchmark or standard for the event. A couple heats before mine, JJF and Gabriel, they both surfed so well in this contest and they slated each other twice. They had to put each other out in this last one, and it’s a shame because they’re the two standouts. It’s a bummer.

Miss Round 2? Check out the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro R2 Highlight Video …including John John’s 9.83.

The only performance of any note today was John John, who flawlessly linked together a 9.8, before weightlessly wafting one of the most beautiful airs we’ve ever seen on the next wave. We’ve always said that round two is all about the losers – round three wins are what really matters – but John John’s win was just a cut above.
