Oi Rio Pro: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks 2015

Shea’s detailed write-up

Oi Rio Pro: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest in Brazil.

The current world champion, Gabriel Medina, is Brazilian; the current world number one, Adriano De Souza, is Brazilian; the winner of the last WSL event at Lowers, Filipe Toledo, is Brazilian. What in the world is in the water down in Brazil? The turbo-charged atmosphere that surrounds their surf scene is producing some of the best competitors in the world. As the event gets underway, you can expect a continued onslaught from the Brazilian contingency as they attack the beachbreak wedges of Rio. With that in mind, I’ve built my Fantasy Surfer team to reflect a mix of surfers that can get it done in a wide range of beachbreak conditions.

Michel Bourez broken hand

Michel Bourez will not be surfing at the fourth stop of the WSL Championship Tour in Rio. Bourez suffered a broken hand and vertebrae from a wipe out at Teahupo’o that will require surgery and at least a six week recovery. He will be replaced in Rio by Alejo Muniz.

One of the worst wipeout I’ve ever had at #teahupoo!! One Brocken hand and 6 weeks out of the water minimum!! Thanks to everyone out there today that helped me out when that happen!! I’m about to get a surgery now!! That drop was worth it tho!!! #GoBigOrGoToTheHospital

Start ‘Em: Kerr, Slater, CJ
Sit ‘Em: Jordy, Banting, Ricardo
Darkhorse: Flores

By now you’ve heard about the purple blob that is on a direct course for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. You’d probably pick Shane Dorian and Mark Healey if you could, because the comp zone may resemble Waimea more than Main Break!

The Filipe Toledo Show might get iced out for now as the conditions are going to be the farthest thing from the reverse-air playground we’ve seen in the first two events. What’s so awesome is that guys like Filipe can show us that they will charge in the heavy stuff! You never know who might just come out of the cowboy closet and flex their charging muscles. With that said, this circus just got super interesting, making picking your lineup pretty challenging.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Margaret River Pro: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 2015 contest in West Oz.

While the past few events haven’t offered up much in the way of decent surf, Margaret River is staring down a massive swell-spawning purple blob which should finally give us an opportunity to take in some real action from the world’s best. And man, do the 34 need to let off the steam that has been building due to a lack of surf this season. When Margaret’s is over 6 foot, it becomes an open-ocean venue, requiring an entirely new skill set to dominate. It’s always interesting see who has the meat to throw around a big board on a large workable wall. For this event, my FS team is composed of surfers with the experience and skill to successfully navigate the fiery, open-ocean conditions we’re hoping to see for this comp.

Margaret River Pro Wildcards

Alejo Muniz & Jay Davies will be the wildcards in the 2015 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Alejo received the wildcard for being on the top of the QS rankings and will surf in Round 1 against Medina and Freddy-P. Jay won the trials and will surf against Mick and Wilko.

Jay hadn’t been in a contest jersey since the trials for this event last year, and on that occasion he didn’t make it past the opening rounds. Things were different today though; He surfed four heats, losing in the first, no-losers round and then winning each of the following scraps. -more-

I have some good news and some bad news as the MWCT (Mushy Wave Championship Tour) continues at Main Break Margaret River. The good news: A huge swell coincides with the start of the waiting period and it should continue to pump for multiple days. The bad news: It takes Commissioner Kieren Perrow approximately two hours of getting barreled at The Box before he can comfortably make a call to change locations. Oh, and permits don’t allow for North Point.
