ADS is such an amazing competitor. He never makes mistakes, hardly falls, and has all the tricks in the book. Not only is he surfing better than ever, he continues his quest to study the sport and strengthen his skills to patch any potential weak spots. With a somewhat small wave forecast ahead, look for ADS to come into this event fresh, focused, and ready to win his first WCT in 2014.

How to win at Trestles

Brian Roddy talks with Kolohe Andino about what it’ll take to win the Hurley Pro at Trestles.

The Lowers wall provides a lot of opportunities to mix it up. If you’re doing the same maneuver on every section, every wave then the judges are going to pick up on that and you’ll get scored lower and lower. Guys definitely have to watch out for that and make sure they keep variety in mind.

Kolohe talks candidly about his recent success in bigger waves and Carissa openly disclose details about her parents’ divorce. While they’re at it, both surfers get waves – of course, surfing them in that progressive way that the world admires. All in all, it’s an exercise in progress.

Surfer Stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Trestles, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in performance waves (vs barreling or power waves). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth. The Hurley Pro Trestles Pundit Picks: The Blind Team.

How are Kolohe Andino and Carissa Moore preparing for the 2014 Hurley Pro Trestles? For Kolohe, it’s an opportunity to keep his career-best streak alive and possibly even score his first ever WCT victory–at his home break nonetheless. For Carissa, it’s a chance to make ground in the budding sizzler of a women’s world title race.

Derek Rielly’s Power Rankings

Derek Rielly gives his Power Rankings after the Billabong Pro Tahiti as we head into the Hurley Pro at Trestles.

1. Gabriel Medina 6. Taj Burrow
2. Kelly Slater 7. Mick Fanning
3. John John Florence 8. Bede Durbidge
4. Kolohe Andino 9. Nat Young
5. Joel Parkinson 10. Josh Kerr

With a theatrical innocence, Gabriel threw aside bravado for studied consistency. Gabriel knows. He knows that Mick Fanning has won three world titles from a shadowy, do-what-it-takes-to-win-but-never-more approach. He wasn’t there to make online viewers or channel jockies clap their hands and shriek with delight. Leave that to Owen Wright, to Kai Otton, to John John and Kelly. And so for the week of competition, Gabriel caught two medium-sized waves in every heat, rode them as well as a wave could be ridden, but never so close to the edge that he might fall off, and beat the Greatest Athlete ever.
