Billabong Pro Teahupoo Tahiti Pundit Picks Nick Carroll 2014

Nick Carroll’s break down

Surfing Life’s pundit Nick Carroll breaks the field down into three categories:

IN THEIR ELEMENT: JJF, Kelly, Owen, Parko, Mick, Ace, Raoni

DANGER MEN: Freddy-P, SeaBass, Kerr, CJ, Otton, Tuemata, Hedge

SEE WHAT THEY’RE MADE OF: Bourez, Medina, Wilko, Pupo, Julian

Look, not to get too many hopes up, but this event is gonna go next level. Each year it’s the wildcard in the pack, and in 2014 it’ll probably behave like one. Whoever takes out the Billabong Pro may well eventually lay claim to the greatest contest win of the WCT year.

Billabong Pro Teahupoo Tahiti Forecast: Fair to Epic!

Billabong Pro Teahupoo Tahiti Forecast: Fair to Epic!

Conditions are looking promising for the main event with a big swell due to arrive on Aug 18/19 and second on Aug 20/21. For more forecast sources, check out our forecast page.

The real fireworks will come throughout the week of the 18th as we see a series of very solid SW swells impact Tahiti. While we need to see these forecasted storms actually develop before we can really nail down specific size and conditions, there is strong potential for the event to see some of the largest competition waves of the last few years during the final week-plus of the waiting period.

Billabong Pro Teahupoo Trials: Kevin Bourez Wipeout

Michel Bourez’s brother Kevin Bourez fell in his Round 1 heat in the trials at the Air Tahiti Nui Billabong Pro Teahupoo Trials. Kevin is in stable condition following four hours of surgery from multiple head fractures and deep facial lacerations. He continues to be monitored closely. Here is a video of the fall (second wave, surfer in white).

update Aug 12: It turns out the clip of the surfer in white on the wave might actually be Tikanui Smith and not Kevin Bourez.

Brian Roddy’s prophecies

Brian Roddy lays out some analytics, guesses and gossip on the 2014 Billabong Pro Teahupoo.

Gabriel Medina is your current world number 1 and he’s there because he’s had unwavering, steel-like consistent year. There’s no question that Gabriel will become Brazil’s first world champion if he maintains this fiery pace, but our word is that he won’t. Watch for Gabe to make an early exit from the Billabong Pro.

Kelly Slater has been largely absent from the 2014 World Tour. He’s without an early season win for the first time since like 1932. Don’t look so surprised to see tears of champagne dripping down Kelly’s face when all is said and done. If not, he’ll likely slunp into even more apathy. Tahiti is a loaded event for the greatest surfer of all time.
