Shea Lopez’s picks

Shea Lopez makes his Fantasy Surfer picks for the 2014 Billabong Rio Pro.

A tropical opposite to the veteran-favoring Bells event, Rio de Janeiro requires youthful exuberance to shine. The quick, thick, and challenging sandbars of Rio can be a tuberiding treat or aerial feast for those with the right skill set. It’s a highly-charged atmosphere on the beach, which buckles some competitors and brings out the best in others. With a fun swell forecasted to kick off the waiting period, you can expect the Top 34 to showcase some great surfing in the opening rounds.

My Fantasy Surfer team lost a few of the older, more grounded surfers. Replacing them are younger guys with plenty to prove.

Nick Carroll’s Power Rankings

Nick Carroll ranks and analyzes the field coming out of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach as we head into the Billabong Rio Pro in 2014.

Sometimes while reading the comments sections regarding Fanning, I get the sense that people are a bit confused about what it takes to be a World Champion. Well, for those who wanted to see it, Mick gave us all another little lesson in the craft at Bells Beach.

Best surfer of the contest. Maybe, on that laughably scored 9.93, he was the best surfer ever at Bells Beach. Of all the surfers currently on Tour, Jordy’s the one most suited to the term “freak.” He could literally do anything. I have no idea what he’ll do next. But, like everyone else, I’ll be watching.

Ross Williams’ picks

Ross Williams gives his picks for the 2014 Billabong Rio Pro.

When picking your team for Rio make sure you have the conditions in mind. It would be a mistake to simply chalk up this beachbreak as a small-wave wizard’s paradise. It’s actually a pretty hollow wave that offers plenty of power, making Rio a good location for all-sized surfers. Think of the guys who are good in the barrel and take full advantage of big ramps. This is where I insert Gabriel’s name.

Derek Rielly gives us a review of his top 10 surfers coming out of Bells.

Taj hates to lose a final, hates to lose to Mick Fanning and especially hates to lose needing a piddly seven. Slimmer than he’s ever been and stronger than the Empire State Building, Taj makes his other competitors look like they’re riding with drogues. And yet that face, so forcibly contorted into a smile on the presentation stage when all he wanted to do was give out a maniacal banshee cry.

Owen’s mouth is again filled with the salty taste of blood, pummelling with such fury he turns wave into hamburger. Welcome back!

Local surfers Peterson Crisanto and David do Carmo have been awarded the wildcards spots.

Glenn Hall will sit in for Kai Otton who is taking the event off for the birth of his child.

I got the call up for Brazil today and so happy that’s its not due to someone being injured. All the best to @ottz16 and @sare_herbert for the birth of their baby.

Surfer Stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. The Blind Team did OK at Margs (840 pts, #1033 rank), but didn’t fair so hot at Bells (710 pts, #17472 rank). For Rio, we picked our team based on past results in performance waves (vs power or barrels). For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Groundswell’s detailed write-up

Groundswell, the Fantasy Surfer forum moderator, lays down his Billabong Rio Pro pundit picks. For his detailed write-ups, check out his forum post. Like for the final few rounds at Bells, Jordy seems to have been left out…again. Poor guy.

HOT (no surprises here):
Mick Fanning, Adriano De Souza, Owen Wright

WARM (almost a lock to end up on your teams):
Kelly Slater, Filipe Toledo, Michel Bourez

COOL (you may win or lose the event with these guys):
Josh Kerr, Miguel Pupo, Kai Otton

COLD (if these surfers do well, it would REALLY surprise me):
Brett Simpson, Tiago Pires, Kolohe Andino
