Ross Williams’ picks

Ross Williams gives his start ’em, sit ’em pundit pick list for the 2015 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the 10th stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Start ‘Em: Medina, Kolohe, Mason
Sit ‘Em: Slater, Parko, Ricardo
Darkhorse: Ibelli

Supertubos is the ultimate platform for barrel riders and punt specialists. A steep shorebreak that resembles Stradbroke Island (Australia) or Pascuales (Mexico). Past winners include Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Kai Otton, Adriano de Souza and Kelly Slater. What do all these surfers have in common? They are all fast, light and resilient. They surf like gazelles. They approach the vert ramps with aggression and quickness. They adjust to Portugal’s simultaneously exciting yet constricting pockets for waves.

Now, before you go locking in your players based on this, keep in mind that the current forecast looks a bit small so the backup site of Belgas could come into play. Located on the other side of the peninsula, this beachbreak behaves quite different from Supertubos. Popular with the local surfers, this fun stretch of waves still lends itself well to the nimble, but it definitely provides a bit more breathing room for the big fellas to move. Like France, there are tides and ever-shifting sandbars to consider as well.

Shea’s picks

Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Shea Lopez Pundit Picks his team for the 10th stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

With the world title now a two-horse race between Mick and Adriano (with Mick my likely pick to become world champion come season’s end), my focus will be on the surfers looking to make a statement for 2016. As a venue, Supertubos can be as challenging as any lineup in the world, breaking mere feet from the most enthusiastic crowd of surf fans found outside of Brazil. Current forecasts show some impressive swell tracking towards Supertubes, so pick your team accordingly.

Surfer stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Portugal, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in the European leg. For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth.
