Jimmicane’s Passion Picks

Yeah, yeah, yeah…go with the popular pick after his dream run last year. Well, did you watch last year? This wave is tailor-made for Natty boy. I believe this kid will ring that bell multiple times in his career. I believe it should start now. And I believe we are going vert if it does. -more-

Taj Burrow. You don’t finish in the top five at the highest level of pro surfing 17 years straight without the deepest competitive streak. Finishing next to last at Margarets, in his own backyard, and beaten twice in a row by Bede Durbidge, is killing Taj. He ain’t sleeping! At Bells his surfing will imprint evident marks on the fat walls and some’ll be calling it the best surfing ever seen there. -more-

Jordy Smith was furious with himself for letting Bede Durbidge sneak a heat-winning wave under priority in their Margaret River quarter final, as he was clearly in trophy-raising form. Last year at Bells, Jordy was once again the surfer of the event, until eventual victor Adriano De Souza outsmarted him and snuffed his flame in the semis. These two wrongs will make everything right in 2014, and Jordy will ring surfing’s loudest trophy. -more-

Captain Kai’s picks

We just stumbled upon Captain Kai’s site. Here’s his take on Fantasy Surfer for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

Another guy picking up momentum and showing some serious power in the West, was Jordy Smith. He had a shocker at Snapper, but in West Oz he was looking his mature best and you know he loves Bells. Huge power carves and a big air game will make the Saffa powerhouse a danger man. … The duo of Taj Burrows and Josh Kerr, both looking solid so far this year will also be worth looking at if you don’t want to splash out on your Fantasy Budget on Mick, Joel or Kelly. -more-

Surfline Power Rankings

At present, the two-wave structure more often than not rewards mediocrity, surfers attempting to “build a house.” I want to see that “house” destroyed by a wrecking ball of performance. I want to see the surfer that does the best surfing in the heat win. I’m tired of watching average surfing defeat a surfer like John John or Jordy Smith whom both more often than not lose because they can’t find a backup wave. By changing the format to one wave it would force the competitors to go for broke from the get go. -more-
