Surfer stats

Shea Lopez, Derek Rielly, Nick Carroll, Ross Williams, Groundswell and the other pundits offer great insight into the surfers when offering their pundit picks. We do it differently. For our Fantasy Surfer pundit picks, we look at the numbers and not the surfers’ names. We go in blind. For Portugal, the Blind Team is picked based on past results in the European leg. For our personal club teams, we pick based on our guts and who we think are in form, but for these picks below, we remove all of the mind games. Here you go. Take it for what it’s worth. Jimmicane’s Passion Picks

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Supertubos.

Pick ‘em
The Elite: JJF, Slater
The Grinders: Jordy, Pupo, Nat, Julian
The Strugglers: Dion, Artiz

Skeptical
The Elite: Median
The Grinders: CJ
The Strugglers: Raoni

John Florence. Gabriel Medina’s future worst nightmare might start sooner than he’d think. This will be the next truly great rivalry in surfing, and goddamn have we needed one for a while! After stumbling out of the gates, Johnathan struck like a cobra — 3rd, 2nd and 1st in the past three events. He’s now a long shot to win the World Title and if nothing else, act as spoiler. If you haven’t seen the episode of #TOURNOTES where JJF candidly expresses his feelings toward Medina, I highly suggest you give it a look. Slater asks, “If we both make the final you better let me win. I need some points.” Johnny responds with, “I just might. Just because…” …because he does not like Medina. Why? Because all Gabriel does is win, and sometimes when he does not win, he cries. Meanwhile all JJF does is surf, and surf better than anyone in this world ever has. He’s clearly better than Medina but as you know, the best surfer does not always place 1st.

Ross William’s picks

Ross Williams gives his start ‘em, sit ‘em list for the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Supertubos.

Start ‘Em: JJF, Julian, Logie
Sit ‘Em: Bourez, Otton, Melling
Darkhorse: Dion

When I’m picking my Fantasy lineup, the first thing I look at is the wave. Supertubos is pretty similar to Hossegor. So, do you bother changing your team? If you believe in momentum and the power of confidence you better do some shuffling. The punchy beachbreak in Portugal will provide tubes and ramps, but it won’t show mercy for the mentally fragile. Here’s my take on who is rolling through the European leg with a big smile and a ton of moxie.

Shea’s detailed write-up

Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal pundit Shea Lopez picks his team for the 2014 contest at Supertubos.

While the Top 34 trek from France to Portugal, a rather large storm is pulling together directly into the swell window for Supertubes. For Kelly Slater, the large swell should allow an easier path to the final and a continued shrinking of Medina’s lead going into Pipeline. But don’t count out the dark horses in this event. The bottom half of the ratings are fighting tooth and nail to earn another year on Tour. These surfers could prove to be incredibly dangerous and could spell all kinds of trouble for Medina, who’s trying to keep Slater at bay and claim his first world title.
