Jimmicane’s Passion Picks

Surfing Magazine’s Jimmicane gives his passion picks for the 2015 Oi Rio Pro, the fourth stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Pick ’em
The Elite: Toledo, Taj
The Grinders: Medina, Slater, Jordy, Jadson
The Strugglers: Kolohe, Banting

Maybe consider
The Elite: ADS
The Grinders: SeaBass
The Strugglers: Alejo

I thought long and hard about this one but in the end decided not to throw [Adriano] on my team. After looking over the past 4 years of results, it’s solid. 9th, 2nd, 5th, 1st. Sure the win came in unison with floatergate, but for an event that’s basically a crapshoot, Adriano shows solid consistency. Unfortunately, Passion Picks doesn’t give a shit about consistency. And of course, his dream run is bound to end at some point. Maybe it’s unlikely to think it ends in Brazil, but I want a good title race and Adriano is currently in the way of that by doing too well.

Oi Rio Pro Wildcard

David Do Carmo has been named a wildcard in the 2015 Oi Rio Pro and will surf against either Mick Fanning and Italo Ferreira, or Adriano De Souza and Kai Otton in Round 1. Along with Do Carmo, a second wildcard will be determined after the Quiksilver Pro Saquarema.

Do Carmo made his mark on the CT last year when he defeated then-reigning World Champion Mick Fanning in Round 2 of the Rio Pro. In the next round he led 11-time World Champ Kelly Slater for the majority of their heat, though Slater ultimately won the heat. On the Qualifying Series, Do Carmo’s best finishes in 2014 were ninth place at the 6 Star-rated Burton Toyota Pro and at the Mahalo Surf Eco Festival. His career best is a runner-up finish at the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Piedras Negras Pro Ilo-Moquega. That same year, he became the Brazilian Professional Surfing Champion, a regional title. -more-

Surfline preview

Ben Mondy gives a preview of what we can expect at the Oi Rio Pro, the fourth stop on the WSL Championship Tour.

Watch for: Toledo, Medina, ADS, JJF, Kolohe, Kerr, Julian, Banting, Ferreira, Taj, Mick, Flores, Dusty, Jordy

While the haters may debate the sometimes marginal conditions, Rio does provide surf that 99% of us can relate to. There is also a real tuberiding element to the competition, as Barra da Tijuca has the potential to provide sand-dredging barrels, given a push of south swell, but only if the shifting sands align.

Stack Your Rio Roster with Young Guns
It’s time to clean up your roster and make way for the whipper snappers on this year’s Championship Tour. I know what you’re thinking: Last year Michel “the Spartan” Bourez, a far cry from a whippersnapper, won the event. But we’re looking at playing the odds, people, Bourez is out with an injury and the odds this year favor the surfers who will punch, float and fly in the tricky beachbreak of Barra da Tijuca. The tight, fast waves at Barra makes it difficult for the guys who prefer to draw out their lines and rely on large open faces to move.
